Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What is SUP?
A. Stand Up Paddle Boarding, (SUP), is the new water-sport that is exploding into popularity. Essentially it is standing on a giant surfboard and propelling yourself along with a single ended paddle.
SUP also known as Beach Boy Surfing, is a water-sport that can be enjoyed by everyone, everywhere there is water. It can be a serene and peaceful form of gentle exercise or exciting and physically demanding, however you decide to do it; it is great for your body.
Training on unbalanced surfaces is very effective for building the core muscle groups, (stomach and back) and for training muscles to fire in co-coordinated ways so that the benefits are immediately transferable to other dynamic sports and activities.
Stand Up Paddle Boarding, (SUP) originated in Hawaii over 40 years ago as a way for surfing instructors to manage large groups of learner surfers. Standing on the board gives you a better view of what is going on around you such as incoming waves. When standing up you can also see much more clearly down through the surface of the water than you can in a canoe or kayak. Interestingly, the history of this sport goes back much further even than Hawaii.
Stand up paddle boarding is safe and does not require expensive lessons or special conditions.
Q. Do I have to know how to surf to SUP?
A. No, you do not need any surfing skills to enjoy SUP.
Q. How hard is it to SUP?
A. It is not hard to Stand Up Paddleboard at all. Everyone, all ages can give it a try. Just make sure to have a very large board your first try. At first you may feel a little tipsy, but with a few pointers and a little practice you will be on your way.
Q. How do I care for my Stand Up Paddleboard?
A. Take care with your board to avoid cracks, scratches, and dents.
- Keep board and traction pad out of direct sun when not in use, and place the board bottom’s up when on shore.
- Remove the fins from your board after each use.
- Store your board in a dry, cool place and remove it from your board bag when wet.
- If you use the board in salt water conditions, rinse the board with fresh water after each use.
Q. What is the purpose of an Auto Air-Vent?
A. Air pressure can build up internally when going up/down in elevation or under heat. This vent is to release pressurized air from within the EPS foam core of the board, saving your board from potential issues caused as a result of this pressure. Our Air Vents DO NOT NEED TO BE REMOVED. They are self regulating (allow for air to move in and out without opening the valve). Just rinse the vent area with water when you wash off your boards to keep salt water from crusting up the system.
